Don’t panic: you are still on time for this year! Let’s find out together when Mother’s Day is celebrated in Switzerland, Italy and the rest of the world; what are the origins of this holiday and what to give as a Mother’s Day gift!

The origins of Mother’s Day 2021

Mother’s Day has ancient origins dating back to the time of the Greeks and Romans, a time when the holiday was linked to the worship of fertility and female deities. Exactly like today, back then it was customary to celebrate motherhood during the late spring, associating precisely the end of the cold winter and the beginning of the warm season and blooms with the blossoming of fertile women, ready to beget life.

In more modern times, the need to celebrate the mother figure was expressed in the 1870s U.S. by pacifist and feminist Julia Ward Howe and shortly thereafter also by activist Anna Jarvis. Anna, in order to celebrate her mother figure and honor her own mother after her death, showed stubbornness and insistence in pestering ministers and high officials with requests, succeeding in getting the first Mother’s Day celebrations on May 19, 1909 in Grafton.

Five years later, President Wilson turned the event into a public event to honor the mothers of all soldiers and stipulated that the festivities would be repeated every second Sunday in May. For this reason, Anna Jarvis is still considered the originator of Mother’s Day in the United States.

Instead, Mother’s Day in Switzerland was brought by the Salvation Army and the YMCA youth association in 1914 and 1917, albeit with poor results. It was not until 1930, after the urgings of Juliette Musy, wife of the president of the Confederation at the time, that the holiday gained prominence and even began to be publicized.

Mother’s Day when is it celebrated?

Mother’s Day is celebrated in most parts of the world, including Switzerland, Italy and the U.S., on the second Sunday in May. However, in Egypt it falls on March 21, in Thailand on August 12, in Argentina on the second Sunday in October, and in Norway on the second Sunday in February.

What to give for Mother’s Day

Gifts, we know, must come from the heart. Especially for someone as important as our mom!

Along with the ever-present fresh flowers, chocolates and sweets, however, it is important to choose something that represents our mothers and the relationship we have with them.

Room fragrances, for example, are an excellent customizable gift that can describe the character and temperament of the person living in the home.

For Mother’s Day 2021, choose a fragrance that represents your mom, your relationship and, of course, her personality, to scent the familiar nest where she raised you and associate memories with an olfactory experience.

Migani room fragrances, a renowned Italian company based in Riccione, are perfect for the occasion and you will find them at Light House Locarno in the following scents:

  • Light Linen: generally used by freelancers such as lawyers and doctors in their offices. Perfect for professional moms who are engaged full-time in their work activities.
  • Absinthe: women’s favorite scent, with notes of mugwort, fine and sweet tones.
  • Spicy Ginger: my favorite! It is an energizing fragrance obtained from ginger root. For strong, feisty women.
  • Amber: fragrance obtained from the stone of the same name but usually more appreciated by men.

The fragrances, available in three different sizes (125ml, 250ml and 500ml), can be combined with the heart-shaped perfume jar, which can also be purchased in three different sizes.

Mother’s Day what to give to gardening lovers
