LightHouse curiosity: History of candle making. In 1834, Joseph Morgan, a pewter maker from Manchester, England, patented a machine that revolutionized candle making. It enabled the continuous production of candles in molds using a cylinder with a moving piston to eject the candles as they solidified. This more efficient mechanized production produced about 1,500 candles per hour (according to his patent “… with three men and five boys [la macchina] will produce two tons of candles in twelve”). This allowed candles to become an easily available commodity for the masses.
