In more modern times, the need to celebrate the maternal figure has been shown in the United States in the 1870s by pacifist and feminist Julia Ward Howe and, shortly after, by the activist Anna Jarvis. To celebrate and honor her mother after her death, Anna showed stubbornness and insistence in sending requests to ministers and senior officials. In the end, she managed to get the first Mother’s Day celebrations on May 19, 1909, in Grafton.<\/p>\n\n

Five years later, President Wilson turned the event into a public occasion to honor the mothers of all soldiers. He also determined that the festivity should be repeated every second Sunday in May.
