On the occasion of Earth Day 2021, I will tell you about the environmentally friendly fabric that is friendly to the environment and your skin: linen.

The event of the day, Earth Day 2021 or World Earth Day, is an international event with the purpose of raising awareness of environmental sustainability and the preservation of our planet. Each year a different theme is put in the spotlight, focusing on urgent actions to take to care for the earth and make it thrive in harmony.

The theme at the heart of International Earth Day 2021 is “Restore our Earth,” which, while intended to remind us how important it is to reduce our environmental impact, also winks at the desire for rebirth that all nations are experiencing following the effects of the pandemic.

World Earth Day 2021: what are its origins

International Earth Day, at the time simply “Earth Day,” was first promoted and after a few attempts, on April 22, 1970 in the U.S. by John McConnell.

McConnell, an ecology and peace activist, argued that human beings had an obligation to care for the earth by sharing resources equitably. Therefore, he proposed the establishment of a national day to raise awareness of environmental resources among the people of the United States. The initiative, submitted to UNESCO as early as 1969, came to fruition the following year, eventually involving as many as 180 nations and slowly, the rest of the world. In 1990, International Earth Day mobilized 141 countries and a total of 200 million people, turning the event, which until then had been held every 10 years, into an annual event.

Also noteworthy was the 2000 edition, the year in which the advent of the Internet and the participation of show business personalities (including Leonardo Di Caprio) contributed to the event’s worldwide popularity.

Earth Day 2021 and fashion: sustainability initiatives

The fashion industry, which represents one of the most polluting manufacturing sectors, has once again answered the call this year by engaging in multiple initiatives to implement more sustainable behaviors and techniques within its organization.

Indeed, multiple brands have proposed environmentally sustainable alternatives for the production of bags and jewelry. Some companies, on the other hand, have engaged in implementing production processes to safeguard the working conditions of their employees. However, whenever the topic of “ecology,” “earth day,” and “sustainability” comes up, I can’t help but look around my bright store and lay my eyes on the most eco-friendly products around me-and there are quite a few!

Flax is a fabric of the highest quality, generally obtained from not fully mature crops made in deep alluvial soils. A remarkably thriving territory for the harvest of this fiber of excellence is certainly Egypt but among the best areas for its maceration are also Belgium (maceration in the Lys River), Holland, Ireland, France and Northern Italy. And it is from right here in Italy that most of the natural linen I have chosen to include in my selection of clothing and linens for the home comes from. In contrast, being a very breathable fabric, linen promotes a cooler feeling during the summer, bringing with it countless additional benefits. Perfect for anyone with dust or dust mite allergy problems, it also seems that flax, precisely because it is hypoallergenic, may also have healing and soothing properties in some cases of dermatitis!

In addition to design, which is the first aspect capable of appealing to our senses by making our hearts flutter, we can decide to clothe our home, our world, and last but not least, our bodies, with a noble fiber, eco-friendly and cruelty-free fabrics .
