Mother’s Day 2021: it is probably one of the most difficult holidays to remember due to its variable date and different traditions in various countries. Suppose you have friends from all over the world on Facebook and Instagram. In that case, it will really feel like this holiday could be celebrated anytime!

But don’t panic: you still have time to buy this year’s presents! Let’s discover together when to celebrate Mother’s Day in Switzerland, Italy and the rest of the world; what are the origins of this celebration and the best presents to give on Mother’s Day!

The origins of Mother’s Day 2021

Mother’s Day has ancient origins that date back to the time of the Greeks and Romans, a period in which the celebration was linked to the cult of fertility and female deities. Just like today, in that period, it was usual to celebrate motherhood in late spring. It meant associating the end of the cold winter and the beginning of the warm season to the blossoming of fertile women, ready to generate life.

In more modern times, the need to celebrate the maternal figure has been shown in the United States in the 1870s by pacifist and feminist Julia Ward Howe and, shortly after, by the activist Anna Jarvis. To celebrate and honor her mother after her death, Anna showed stubbornness and insistence in sending requests to ministers and senior officials. In the end, she managed to get the first Mother’s Day celebrations on May 19, 1909, in Grafton.

Five years later, President Wilson turned the event into a public occasion to honor the mothers of all soldiers. He also determined that the festivity should be repeated every second Sunday in May. For this reason, Anna Jarvis is still considered the creator of Mother’s Day in the United States.

Mother’s Day in Switzerland was brought by the Salvation Army and the YMCA youth association in 1914 and 1917, although with little success. It was not until 1930, after the pressure of Juliette Musy, wife of the president of the Confederation of the time, that the holiday gained importance and started to be publicized.

What day is Mother’s Day 2021?

Mother’s Day is celebrated in most of the world, including Switzerland, Italy and the USA, on the second Sunday in May. In Egypt, however, it has a fixed date on March 21; in Thailand, it is on August 12; in Argentina, on the second Sunday in October and in Norway, on the second Sunday in February.

Presents for Mother’s Day

Gifts must come from the heart, you know that. Especially if for an important person like our mum!

However, with the never-failing fresh flowers, chocolates, and cakes, it is vital to choose something that represents our mothers and the relationship we have with them.

The home fragrances, for example, are an excellent customizable gift, able to describe the character and personality of the people inhabiting the house.

On Mother’s Day 2021, choose a fragrance that represents your relationship with your mom and her personality, to perfume the nest where she raised you and link all your memories to an olfactory experience.

Migani’s home fragrances, a renowned Italian company from Riccione, are perfect for the occasion, and you will find them at Light House Locarno in the following scents:

  • Light Linen: generally used by freelancers as lawyers and doctors in their own studios. Perfect for professional businesswomen engaged full-time in their work.
  • Wormwood: women’s favorite! With notes of artemisia and refined and sweet tones.
  • Spicy Ginger: my favorite! It is an energizing fragrance obtained from ginger roots, for strong and fierce women.
  • Amber: a fragrance obtained from the homonymous stone but usually more appreciated by men.

The fragrances, available in three different sizes (125ml, 250ml and 500ml), can be combined with a heart-shaped fragrance diffuser, which can also be purchased in three different sizes.
